The whole building of the dormitory felt like a cell on an island surrounded by sea. There was no balcony, no lift, no views, and no hanging clothes were allowed to mar the image of the company. The rule said the only place to dry things was the roof on the eighth fl oor. Not only that, the right side of the roof was specially fenced off to separate the Taiwanese from the mainlanders. A strong steel fence was set on each fl oor to block the way to the fenced part. Also a door at the bottom of the right-hand stairway was always locked. Except the Taiwanese with the permission and the key, no one could touch anything that belonged to the Taiwanese.
